Julian Lilkendey (Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research) found me through science Twitter in May 2020. She wanted a logo that would double as a graphical abstract for a grant application on studying the nutritional role of corals in butterflyfish lipid requirements, especially in terms of energy stores for egg production, and how that changes with bleaching events.

I decided to use simple symbols and colors to represent the components of lipids and egg production, which most audiences wouldn’t have a predetermined visual vocabulary for. This ended up with something with bold lines and a spin on primary colors, so that it would work on a variety of conference posters or presentations. It’s always fun to illustrate butterflyfish!
